Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. At the age of a small girl, Houston started singing professionally in her church's choir. She was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mother. In the year 1981, she did a stint as a fashion model and also appeared on the Seventeen cover. Also, she provided back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her vocals with the New York-based group Material attracted major record labels which included Arista. They signed her with Arista in 1983 where she continued to work for the rest of her career. The debut Whitney Houston album was released in 1985. It would become one of the best-selling albums by an artist. On the album, she released several hit singles including Saving All My Love for You How Will You Know That You Give Good Love? and The Greater Love of All. This helped her achieve seven US number one hits consecutively. It was even better than the Beatles. The album sold three million copies in its initial year in the US and then went on to make 25 million copies worldwide, earning her the first of her six Grammies. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the most successful artists ever. Although the film was not very well received, nor did her performance, the music of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the top of both the singles and album charts across the US for months. It sold 44,000,000 copies. In 1993, it was also when she got married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition musician and father of her only child Bobbi Kristina Brown. At this point when her well-documented usage of drugs began. By 1996, she was a regular user.
