Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963 into a musically inclined family in Newark New Jersey is the daughter of the gospel singers Cissy Houston as well as John Russell Houston Jr. She's also the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. The mother of Whitney Houston and her daughter began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church of Newark when Whitney was only 15 years old. The two sang backing vocals on Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. The singer went on to sing back vocals to Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls and her own mother and was briefly a model appearing on the cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Beginning in 1981, she started to work as a vocalist with the New York-based funk group Material. It was her excellent vocals with this group that caught notice of major record labels such as Arista. The first Whitney Houston album was released in the year 1985. It was one of the best-selling albums of an artist. A number of hit singles, such as the hit songs Saving All My Love For You How Do I know That You Love Me as well as The Most Beautiful Love of All were released from the album, setting the stage for her to beat the Beatles with seven consecutive US top 10s. The album came out in 1987, and it sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The album that followed it in 1987 Whitney featuring the hit songs The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that established her as one of the most successful artists of all time. Although the film was not very well received, nor did her performance, the soundtrack to the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the top of both the singles and album charts in America for months. She sold 44,000,000 copies. In the same year, she got married to the former New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she has a single child Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. About this time her well-documented addiction to drugs began. By 1996, she used to use drugs every day.
