Hitchcock uses The Birds to build suspense by slowing down. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels their relationship before they ever get married. Evan Hunter - better known as Ed McBain - adapted this screenplay, originally a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier, into the popular film. Hitchcock's use of electronic sounds instead of a musical score proved to be extremely effective. Hitchcock was able to investigate a peculiar incident that occurred in the real world of Capitola California, where sooty seabirds attacked in 1961. The birds were believed to be agressive result of diatom poisoning.
